![]() ![]() I will also not be looking at browsers that only work on Microsoft Windows or macOS, even if they are Open Source. With the exception of Librewolf and the Tor Browser, none of the other browsers does anything relevant to protect you against fingerprinting. Please note that I have not considered each browsers resistance to fingerprinting in this article as that is something you can tweak yourself in various ways. I know several other browsers exist, but if they are not mentioned on this list I have either not had a change to investigate them, they are closed source and completely irrelevant (such as Microsoft Edge or Opera), or they are not actively maintained, or they cannot perhaps be trusted for some reason or another. I will try to keep this article updated with relevant information as much as possible. Some browsers either directly violate users by collecting telemetric data without consent, or you have to opt-out rather than opt-in, or they bounce around the Internet visiting places in the background without you knowing (using dns-prefetch or automatic updates etc.), using third party services that operates with a privacy policy you either cannot trust, or that are directly violating your privacy, or they have integrated third party software that do some of these things. What I am addressing in this article are browsers that are either promoted as "privacy-respecting" by the developers, or in general are considered to be so (mostly due to misunderstanding or misinformation), while it is very clear they are not. Naturally you need to be able to use the browser on the Internet and as such you will always leave some kind of trail behind, and this article is not about how you can hide your tracks. Not only can it be difficult to actually define privacy, but it also requires a balance between freedom of choice by the users, security and usability. Privacy as a subject regarding the usage of services on the Internet is a very difficult subject to deal with. ![]() It is also about the lack of user freedom, as in the choice to enable or disable features, such as automatic updates, or forced usage of third party services, or software that the user generally is unaware of or don't have a say about. This article isn't specifically about privacy issues only, it's about promises that are being broken, which might be about privacy. Sometimes prices on products are changed on the same website, depending on tracking information, and two people may view the exact same product on the exact same website yet be presented with very different prices. Many companies, such as Google, track which websites people visit and then use the information, for instance by sending advertising based on one's web browsing history. Privacy on the Internet is important because privacy risks range from the gathering of statistics on users to more malicious acts such as the spreading of spyware and the exploitation of various forms of bugs (software faults). | about | faq | resources | contact | rss Choose your browser carefully ![]() ![]() ![]() Subscriptions may be managed by the user and auto-renewal may be turned off by going to the user’s Account Settings after purchase. There are some basic hoops to jump through, but the process is fairly straightforward. This is just like setting up a personal brokerage account. Since my nephew is under 18, his parents needed to set up a custodial account for him. Once the gift of stock is sent, the recipient (and his parents) have some initial homework to do. So that $50 in Disney stock actually cost me $54.49. It’s worth noting that there is a $4.49 gifting fee that covers brokerage fees. Then you just pay for it like any other gift card and you’re done with it. Once you choose the stock and amount you want to send, you are given the option to print or email the gift. This is what the simple and straightforward process of sending $50 in Disney stock looks like. I opted to buy $50 worth of Disney stock and send it away. But I was able to send a fraction of a share. The problem is I didn’t want to shell out the full price of a single share. Going through this process, I decided to send Disney (NYSE: DIS) shares to a nephew for his birthday. But when they turn 18, they’ll be singing a different tune. Sure, the grandkids, nephews and other little shavers won’t appreciate new holdings in their portfolio now. Stocks on the other hand are proving to be exceptionally resilient, which is why the gift of stocks makes so much sense right now. Now bonds aren’t exactly in the midst of a heyday right now. But I sure did when it came time to buy my first car and I found that I had a couple extra grand in mature bonds to help the cause. I didn’t appreciate them at all at the time. Growing up, every year my grandfather gifted me savings bonds on my birthday. It’s not trying to be everything, and it’s good at what it does… but it’s not going to replace an average investor’s brokerage. "As a result, the Ku Klux Klan and other racist groups adopted a close form of Masonic ritualism," Parfrey says. Freemasonry and other fraternal groups, which said they welcomed all comers who believed in God, were primarily Protestant in perspective. Its members dressed in Native American garb and had rituals inspired by that culture-and yet refused to allow Native Americans into their society. Among the more troubling societies was a fairly large and important group, The Improved Order of the Red Men, which dates back to the early 1800s. The question of who gets admitted to these groups recurs as a theme through history. As Parfrey puts it, taking in the breadth of them provides "a snapshot of America." But secret societies had many purposes and took many shapes: labor unions, business groups, rural/agrarian organizations, religious and occult organizations, sobriety groups, drinking groups, immigrants, anti-immigrant organizations. Of those "More than Six Hundred Secret Societies," Freemasonry is the grandaddy, "like AA is the archetype of all the 12-step sobriety movements," Parfrey says. And the subtitle says it all: A Compilation of Existing Authentic Information and the Results of Original Investigation as to the Origins, Derivation, Founders, Development, Aims, Emblems, Character, and Personnel of More than Six Hundred Secret Societies in the United States, Supplemented by Family Trees of Groups and Societies, Names of Many Representative Members. Stevens's The Cyclopaedia of Fraternities (1899). Parfrey says his primary source was Albert C. "Hundreds of years ago, the Catholic church battled groups of Freemasons over power and money, and the need for secrecy back then was logical." But today it's a bit more mystifying. There were an amazing number of groups "particularly at a time when there was no seeming reason for integrating secret rituals into their organizations," he says. Researching the book was eye-opening (and, fittingly, the cover illustration is the so-called "eye of providence"). Rotary and Kiwanis, less so, but these organizations, like the Masons, require oaths of allegiance. ![]() "Some service-oriented organizations, like Lions or Elks, have a great deal of secret ritual within its structure. "That's our perspective we know that others may feel differently," he says. Parfrey defines a "secret society" as a social group that demands an oath of allegiance to join. "These words are thought to refer to what primitives do in foreign lands." Ritual America shows that hundreds of ritualistic oaths and procedures are practiced behind the doors of lodges and clubs, even today. "Despite the success of Joseph Campbell's PBS series a couple decades ago, what good American thinks he's practicing 'rites' or 'rituals?'" Parfrey asks. Given the vast number of cults and sub-cults, Parfrey knew his research would be surprising to many. But none of the books in the latest wave of pro-Masonic and conspiratorial literature, says Parfrey, "had an image-heavy and sociological approach as does Ritual America." ![]() In recent years, Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code bestsellers revived popular interest in secret societies. The essay stirred up controversy, even leading Marilyn Manson to title one of his songs "King Kill 33." One of the leading subjects of his research, conspiracy theorist James Shelby Downard, proposed a scenario about the JFK assassination that contained a fascinating speculation about the importance of Freemasonic "twilight language" (double and triple meanings, numerology, and onomatology). In 1987 Parfrey published his first essay on this theme, "King-Kill 33," in the first edition of his book, Apocalypse Culture. ![]() ![]() ![]() Couple that with the tweaks to the levels (such as exploding enemies or my particular favourite: getting your perspective wrecked so you can’t really tell how far away things are) and you’ve got a recipe for some really varied combat. Still it fits within the game’s overall narrative quite well so I’m on board. It was pretty subtle at first but looking back over my screenshots from both games it’s very clear that there’s been a decisive change to make the environments more…I’m not sure what to call it. The art style has changed dramatically though, where the previous one was a bit more true to life, so to speak, MCD is much more angular and glitchy. The lighting is a lot more modern with the harsh shadows gone and replaced with a much more natural soft-edge that amplifies the whole blurred reality schtick that the game puts forward. There’s definitely been some improvements in the graphics over the years, even if on the surface it retains the same stark white aesthetic of its predecessor. Will you continue to play, even though there’s nothing on offer? It becomes clear quickly though that you’re not the only one who’s seeking more of this experience and there are others out there who’ve gone down the same path you have before and…might not have come out of it for the better. You’re told in no uncertain terms that there will be no closure, no penultimate moment, instead all you’re offered is more: more killing red guys, more weapons and more ways to hack your mind. Ostensibly kicking off from the end of the previous game MCD puts you back in charge of killing red guys in a stark white environment. ![]() |
